Regretfully, we have to announce that Prof. Ismail Serageldin's special lecture <http://www.cyi.ac.cy/node/1052>  on the "Events in Egypt", scheduled for today (18:15), has been cancelled. Due to yesterday's extraordinary developments in Egypt it was impossible for Prof. Serageldin to travel to Cyprus.

Please accept our deepest apologies for the inconvenience caused.

ΑΚΥΡΟ ΤΟ ΠΙΟ ΚΑΤΩ!!!
As you may be aware, due to the extraordinary events currently taking place in Egypt, and the uncertainty over the ability of our speaker Dr. Ismail Serageldin to travel to Cyprus, the Hubert Curien Memorial Lecture had to be postponed.

Nevertheless, Prof. Ismail Serageldin has today confirmed that he will be able to travel to Cyprus and has accepted to give a special talk entitled "Events in Egypt".

It is therefore our pleasure to invite you to this special lecture to be held on Friday 11th of February at 18.15 at Hilton Hotel, Nicosia.

Prof.  <http://www.serageldin.com/> Ismail Serageldin is the founding director of the  <http://www.bibalex.org/> Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the successor to the legendary ancient Library of Alexandria in Egypt. Prof.
Serageldin is also the chairman of the Executive Council of the World Digital Library (WDL), professor of the International Chair Savoirs contre pauvretι (Knowledge Against Poverty) at Collθge de France, Paris, and has 30 honorary doctorates from universities worldwide.

He serves as Chair and Member of a number of advisory committees for academic, research, scientific and international institutions and civil society efforts which includes the Institut d'Egypte (Egyptian Academy of Science), the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World and the European Academy of Sciences and Arts.

Prof. Serageldin has also served in a number of capacities at the World Bank, including as Vice President for Environmentally and Socially Sustainable Development (1992-1998), and for Special Programs (1998-2000).
He has published over 60 books and monographs and over 200 papers on a variety of topics including biotechnology, rural development, sustainability, and the value of science to society.

Very recently, the US National Academy of Sciences awarded Prof. Serageldin with a <http://www8.nationalacademies.org/onpinews/newsitem.aspx?RecordID=01182011>
Public Welfare Medal, its most prestigious award. He was praised as 'a pioneer in the movement to re-establish the importance of science in the Arab and Muslim world'.
